Government to create a cloud

The Guardian announced this week that the Government is to set up its own cloud computing system from which it hopes to save up to £3.2bn a year from an annual bill of at least £16bn. The Government does not rule out using commercial cloud services such as Google.

The Government will also push for "Open Source" software to be used more widely amongst central and local government's 4 million desktops.

The drive for cloud based efficiencies is gathering pace. These announcements will help remove some of the technical and cultural barriers which have so far slowed down progress towards major IT savings and related public IT service reforms.
